The expansion of digital technologies and the increasing presence of children in cyberspace have created new patterns of social comparison—patterns that, in many cases, lead to weakened self-esteem, reduced self-confidence, and disruptions in children’s identity formation. This study aims to analyze the psychological mechanisms of online social comparison and examine its impact on children’s self-esteem, employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates developmental psychology, media studies, and Islamic education. In the theoretical section, the concepts of self-esteem, its developmental dimensions, and the role of digital interactions are first explained; subsequently, the effects of video games and social networks on children’s emotional and cognitive experiences are examined. Findings indicate that while success in games can enhance a sense of competence, repeated failures and comparison with other players may lead to feelings of inadequacy, diminished self-worth, and damage to self-esteem.In the Islamic section, the research draws on Qur’anic principles and the educational practices of the Infallibles to propose a framework through which the destructive effects of digital comparison can be mitigated. Key protective factors identified include human dignity, monotheistic upbringing, the pivotal role of the family, and the necessity of emotional regulation. Based on the overall conclusion, the study emphasizes that confronting the challenges of modernity requires media literacy, strengthening cognitive skills, and the proper application of Islamic teachings—teachings capable of stabilizing and reinforcing children’s identity formation, self-esteem, and psychological well-being within the context of cyberspace.
